Community donations will help children and youth across KFL&A start the school year with needed supplies.

United Way KFL&A says more than 1,000 backpacks were donated through its annual Backpack Program ahead of the 2026-27 school year.

The final day for donations was Friday, Aug. 14, with backpacks and school supplies collected from community members, businesses and workplaces across the region.

The program provides backpacks and supplies to students from kindergarten through Grade 12 through local schools and child and youth-serving agencies.

President and CEO John DiPaolo says more.

Last year, more than 1,800 children and youth received backpacks and school supplies through the program.

United Way KFL&A says the cost of basic school supplies can range from $200 to $300 per student, including items such as a backpack, lunch bag, binders, pens, pencils and a calculator.

Donations also help fill gaps and purchase supplies in bulk.

Volunteers will pack the donated supplies for distribution before the new school year begins, helping local students start September prepared and supported.
