A woman died when her vehicle drove in and submerged into Lake Ontario as OPP were attempting a traffic stop on April 21.
An OPP officer will not face criminal charges following the death of a 62-year-old woman whose vehicle entered the water in Greater Napanee.
The woman died by drowning after her vehicle left Highway 33 on April 21, 2026, and entered a water discharge canal connected to Lake Ontario. The vehicle was being followed by an OPP officer who had attempted to stop her for suspected impaired driving.
The Special Investigations Unit says the woman was travelling westbound at about 90 km/h when she lost control. The Subaru struck a guardrail, crossed a driveway and grassy area, hit a fence and entered the canal.
The officer followed for about eight kilometres, with emergency lights activated for nearly three minutes. His cruiser did not hit the Subaru.
SIU Director Joseph Martino says the officer was justified in trying to stop the woman and acted with due care during the pursuit.
The SIU found no reasonable grounds to believe the officer committed a criminal offence. The investigation was closed Aug. 17.
