The Aspirations in Computing Awards are encouraging high school students across Canada to explore computing and technology.
As students settle into a new school year, a national awards program is encouraging more young women and gender-diverse students to consider opportunities in computing and technology.
Wendy Powley, a retired Queen’s University computer science professor, is involved with the Canadian NCWIT Aspirations in Computing Awards.
The program recognizes students in Grades 9 to 12 across Canada for their achievements and interest in computing. With applications now open, students can use the opportunity to have their interests and accomplishments recognized while considering their future education and careers.
Powley says encouraging more young women to enter computing is important as the technology field continues to grow.
She also reflects on her experience teaching computer science to young girls.
Applications for the 2026-27 awards are open until Oct. 27 at 10 p.m. ET. Powley says the program has grown into a community of thousands of women.
The Canadian program is offered in partnership with Queen’s University and the University of Toronto and is sponsored by Shopify Dev Degree.
