Const. Jeff Smith is recovering from life-threatening injuries from last month's shooting at a synagogue.

Belleville police Const. Jeff Smith has been released from hospital and is continuing his recovery at home after suffering life-threatening injuries in a shooting outside Sons of Jacob Synagogue.

The Belleville Police Service shared the update Thursday, Oct. 29, saying Smith is making positive progress following the incident Sept. 20.

Smith suffered multiple gunshot wounds to his head and body while confronting an armed attacker. Police Chief Murray Rodd previously said Smith managed to exit his cruiser and continue engaging the attacker despite his injuries.

Const. Mike McCurdy arrived about two minutes and 47 seconds into the exchange of gunfire and joined the confrontation.

Rodd credited both officers with stopping the attacker and preventing a greater tragedy.

Police say Smith and his family are grateful for the support and encouragement received from the community and beyond.

The service has not provided further details about Smith's recovery or when he may return to duty.
