CUPE calling for immediate action
A recent survey reveals a severe underfunding crisis impacting local school boards in Kingston and Belleville. The Limestone District, Hastings and Prince Edward County, and Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic District School Boards are facing extreme understaffing, unmet student needs, and increased violence.
The survey, conducted with nearly 600 respondents from the Kingston and Belleville regions, highlights significant budget cuts, including $22 million in the Limestone District alone. The reduced funding per pupil has resulted in a lack of support for staff and students, overcrowded classrooms, and frequent disruptions.
More than half (56%) of education workers report experiencing violent incidents on a regular basis, putting both staff and students at risk.
CUPE education workers are calling for immediate action, urging the Ford government to increase school board funding and improve staffing levels to ensure safe and effective learning environments.
