Potential measles exposure between Belleville and Kingston

Public urged to check vaccination status

The South East Health Unit (SEHU) is warning residents of potential exposure to measles at several locations in southeastern Ontario. This follows a confirmed case of measles, unrelated to earlier cases in Kingston or a recent outbreak in Hastings.

People who visited the following locations during the listed dates and times may have been exposed:

• Nicholson Catholic College, Belleville – April 2, 3, and 4, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
• VIA Rail, Train 66, Car 3, Belleville to Kingston – April 4, 5:10 p.m. to 8 p.m.
• Tim Hortons, 661 Cataraqui Woods Dr., Kingston – April 5, 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m.
• Kingston Family Health Team, Centennial Family Physicians office – April 7, 3 p.m. to 5:35 p.m.

SEHU advises anyone who visited these locations to check their measles vaccination status, as immunity requires two doses or proof of immunity through a lab test. Those unsure of their status can access records online or contact their healthcare provider. Public health officials urge unvaccinated individuals or those with only one dose to get vaccinated.

Symptoms of measles, which can appear 7 to 21 days after exposure, include high fever, cough, red eyes, and a blotchy rash. Anyone showing symptoms is advised to stay home and contact a healthcare provider before visiting a clinic.
