An Ontario Provincial Police officer who shot a man during a tense standoff in Camden East, west of the City, will not face criminal charges.
The Special Investigations Unit says the officer acted to protect himself and others from a knife attack. The incident happened on January 17, 2025, after 911 calls reported a man threatening violence at a home.
Officers found a 41-year-old man holding two knives and refusing to come outside. For over an hour, police tried to calm him down. The man, who was intoxicated, also showed officers a BB gun and threatened to rush them.
When the man advanced with the knives, officers fired ARWEN (less lethal) rounds and bullets. He was hit and taken to hospital in serious condition.
The SIU reviewed bodycam footage and physical evidence. Two knives and a BB gun were found at the scene.
The watchdog ruled the officer’s use of force was legal and reasonable.
