MP Michael Barrett says he has heard from constituents worried about damage, costs, economic and environmental impacts that the proposed rail line could bring.
Communities across Ontario are opposing the proposed Alto high-speed rail line, a project that would connect Toronto to Quebec City. The line is part of a 1,000-kilometre network expected to operate trains at up to 300 km/h, with stops in Ottawa, Montreal, Laval, and other major cities.
Michael Barrett, MP for Leeds-Grenville-Thousand Islands and Rideau Lakes, said land acquisitions are expected to begin this year, but many landowners do not want to sell.
He added that he has heard from constituents worried about damage, costs, economic and environmental impacts, and more. Barrett said Leeds and Grenville has a rich history and old infrastructure that cannot be replaced.
Barrett made his opinion clear on the project.
Municipalities including Rideau Lakes Township, South Frontenac Township, Belleville, and others have publicly opposed the plan.
Construction is estimated to start in 2029–2030, with full completion by 2044.
