The threats come as the U.S. pushes for major changes to CUSMA, the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement.
On the heels of U.S. President Donald Trump’s 50 per cent tariff threats on Canadian exports, local MP Michael Barrett says Canada needs to continue standing strong.
He says it is difficult to understand why Canada continues to be singled out.
Barrett says he and his party want to support the federal government in its efforts to reverse the tariff threats.
The threats come as the U.S. pushes for major changes to CUSMA, the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement. The trade deal is currently under review as the countries discuss its future.
The White House has also pointed to trade disputes, including recent Canadian provincial bans on U.S. alcohol products, as reasons behind the new tariffs.
Barrett says while Canada should always work to strengthen its relationship with the United States, it also needs to focus on building a stronger economy at home.
He says finding new markets while continuing to strengthen the Canada-U.S. relationship will be key.
The tariffs are scheduled to take effect August 19.
