Kingston’s long-awaited inclusive playground opens today at Shannon Park

Families can begin enjoying the accessible play space ahead of the official grand opening celebration in September

Children and families can begin enjoying Kingston's new Jumpstart Inclusive Playground at Shannon Park starting Friday after 12 p.m.

The playground officially opens for play on July 24, marking a major milestone for the Inclusive Play Project, a community-led initiative to create Kingston's first fully accessible playground for people of all abilities.

The project raised more than $1.3 million through donations, fundraising and community support. This year's Tim Hortons Smile Cookie campaign also contributed $232,286 toward the project.

Located beside the Rideau Heights Community Centre, the playground includes accessible features such as rubber safety surfacing, ramps and equipment designed to support a wide range of mobility and sensory needs.

Founder Rachel Doornekamp reflects on the process.

Organizers thanked Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities, the City of Kingston, donors, sponsors, volunteers and community members for helping bring the project to life. Doornekamp explains the importance of this project.

An official grand opening celebration is planned for Saturday, Sept. 12, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Shannon Park. More event details will be announced soon.
