Kingston residents have only hours left to enjoy tax-free dining and shopping. The federal government's GST/HST holiday ends tomorrow, (Feb 15) marking the close of a two-month break on certain purchases.
Since Dec. 14, consumers have saved on restaurant meals, prepared foods, snacks, some alcoholic beverages, children’s clothing and more. The temporary tax relief aimed to boost spending during the holiday season and into the new year.
While many shoppers took advantage of the savings, experts say it could take time to measure the full economic impact. Businesses may see lingering effects as customers adjust to paying tax again.
Restaurants and retailers could experience a short-term dip in sales after the break ends. However, analysts will need months to assess whether the tax holiday successfully increased overall consumer spending.
For now, Kingston residents have until the end of today (Feb. 14) to enjoy their final tax-free purchases before the GST/HST returns.
