Two years ago, Corey Dunn wasn’t sure if he would ever walk again.
The Kingston man is turning his recovery into a 570-kilometre trek to raise money for Kingston Health Sciences Centre’s (KHSC) Neurosurgery Department. Corey Dunn says that he didn't expect to have so many people cheering him on.
In August 2023, Dunn suddenly lost feeling in his legs after months of back pain. Doctors discovered a severe spinal infection had destroyed part of his vertebrae and compressed his spinal cord. He underwent surgery that required two metal rods and 12 screws, followed by months of rehabilitation to relearn how to stand and walk.
Dunn, 43, who once trained for strongman competitions, is walking 10 kilometres for each of the 57 days he spent in hospital. His goal is to raise $10,000 in gratitude for the health-care team that saved him.
There are more ways that Corey Dunn spreads joy. He loves to keep the patients at KHSC laughing and happy.
The trek, called Corey Dunn’s Trek for KHSC Neurosurgery, runs until October 31. Donations can be made through the fundraising page.
