KHSC award recognizes two local professionals for going above and beyond for patients.
Two Kingston health-care professionals are being recognized for the compassion, empathy and dedication they bring to patient care every day.
Kingston Health Sciences Centre’s Patient and Family Advisory Council has presented its annual Exceptional Healer Award to cardiologist Dr. Peggy DeJong and gastroenterology nurse practitioner Chao Zhu.
Now in its ninth year, the award honours physicians, nurses and allied health professionals who demonstrate outstanding patient- and family-centred care.
Volunteer patient experience advisor and award founder Susan Bedell says Dr. DeJong stood out for the compassion and support she gives patients during difficult moments.
Patti Cox, co-chair of the awards committee, says that Chao Zhu was recognized for being a trusted and dependable support for patients throughout their care journey.
Both recipients were nominated by patients who praised their communication, kindness and commitment to helping people feel heard and supported during difficult medical situations.
Bedell said this year’s nominations highlighted health-care workers who treat patients as individuals while building strong relationships based on trust and respect.
Cox said recipients are chosen not only for their clinical skill, but also for their compassion, empathy and dedication to improving the patient experience.
This year, the council received 30 nominations from patients, families, staff and fellow health-care professionals.
Nominations for next year’s Exceptional Healer Award remain open year-round through Kingston Health Sciences Centre’s Patient and Family Advisory Council.
