Kingston councillor under fire again for controversial comments after housing vote
A Kingston city councillor has once again breached the city’s code of conduct, according to a new report heading to council this week.
Meadowbrook-Strathcona District Coun. Jeff McLaren is under scrutiny for comments he made during a media interview after council voted against providing $2.3 million to a proposed 248-unit co-op housing project.
In the interview, McLaren suggested the decision may have been influenced by politics, including an attempt to stop his possible run for mayor. The city’s integrity commissioner says these remarks cast doubt on other councillors’ motives and break the rule against making speculative accusations.
The code of conduct requires councillors to avoid making unfounded or disparaging comments about one another.
This is McLaren’s second code violation in five months. He was previously found to have shared information from a private meeting.
The commissioner recommended a formal reprimand but no fine, accepting McLaren’s claim that he believed the comments were off the record.
