More than 100 staff will be affected as the company proceeds with restructuring plans.
News of layoffs at Invista in Kingston is causing some frayed nerves outside the plant.
The company announced on Thursday that they intend on cutting more than 100 jobs as part of their restructuring plan.
According to the Whig-Standard, an audio recording of a meeting with staff revealed that the Kingston plant has not been profitable and cannot continue operating the way they are now.
The layoffs are expected to begin on June 21 and wrap up on August 2.
Mayor Bryan Paterson expressed disappointment at the news in a post on Facebook.
He says the City will be working with their partners to ensure to ensure that individuals and families have the opportunities and support they need to remain in Kingston.
Kingston and the Islands MPP Ted Hsu issued a statement calling the job cuts a considerable loss for the community and the province.
He says he will be looking for clear communication from both Invista and the provincial government on why this is happening.
The news of the Kingston layoffs comes nine months after Invista closed its plant in Maitland putting another 100 people out of work.
KingstonDaily.ca made several attempts to reach someone from Invista about the job cuts but were unsuccessful.
