Authorities work to determine cause of death following medical emergency at federal prison west of Kingston.
The Ontario Provincial Police say an inmate at Bath Institution, west of Kingston, has died.
On Thursday, Jan. 29, a 49-year-old man was found in medical distress in his cell shortly before 10 a.m. He was taken to a local hospital and later air-lifted to a trauma centre in Toronto, where he was pronounced dead on Saturday, Jan. 31.
The OPP-led Joint Forces Penitentiary Squad is investigating the death under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch. Investigators are working with the Office of the Chief Coroner, the Forensic Pathology Service, and Correctional Service of Canada, with support from the OPP Forensic Identification Service.
A postmortem examination will be conducted to determine the cause of death. Authorities say the investigation remains ongoing and no further details are being released at this time.
