Former United Way KFL&A president and CEO Bhavana Varma has been appointed a Member of the Order of Canada, one of the country's highest civilian honours.
The appointment was announced Friday by Governor General Louise Arbour as part of a list of 61 new Order of Canada recipients.
Varma, of Kingston, was recognized for her decades of leadership in the non-profit sector. During her time leading United Way in KFL&A, she helped transform the organization into one of Canada's leading charities while promoting diversity, inclusion and collaboration throughout her career.
The Order of Canada recognizes Canadians who have made extraordinary and lasting contributions to the country. Established in 1967, it has honoured nearly 8,800 people from across Canada.
This year's appointments include four Companions, 19 Officers and 38 Members, along with five promotions within the Order. Some promenant names promoted to Companions include actor Michael Fox and soccer star Christine Sinclair.
New appointees will be invited to a future investiture ceremony where they will receive their insignia.
