Cataraqui Conservation has raised the low water condition for the Cataraqui Watershed to Level 3, the highest alert, due to very dry weather and a lack of rainfall.
Officials say the region received only 46 per cent of normal precipitation in August, and stream flows are now well below seasonal averages. “Water managers are very limited in what they can do to alleviate effects without consistent or significant rainfall,” said Mallory Wright, Water Resources Technologist with Cataraqui Conservation.
General Manager David Ellingwood warned that the Level 3 condition will likely remain in place through September unless weather patterns shift. Long-range forecasts call for warm and dry conditions.
Residents are being urged to voluntarily conserve water by limiting outdoor use, repairing leaks and reducing non-essential consumption. Boaters are also advised to use caution, as low levels may expose hidden shoals and obstructions.
Cataraqui Conservation will continue to monitor conditions.
