Ministry wasn't in the dark
A statement from Atura Power has been released about the company's plea for violating the Environmental Protection Act by raising the height of cooling towers at the Napanee Generating Station (NGS) without prior Environmental Compliance Approval (ECA).
The Company says the Ontario Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP) was consulted and later approved the modifications.
The height increase was essential to prevent fog conditions caused by water vapor emissions from the cooling towers, which posed a safety risk on nearby roads. Atura Power stated the project was in the interest of public safety and had no link to contaminants from the station.
The MECP allowed the project to continue, acknowledging the importance of NGS to Ontario's electricity supply.
In the statement, Atura Power says it wants to reassure the community that the modified towers operated only with MECP approval, ensuring no contaminants were discharged into the environment, and it remains committed to transparency and community safety
