Damage, but no injuries

Two tornadoes have now been confirmed in the Kingston area after the powerful storm that swept through eastern Ontario on June 30.

The Northern Tornadoes Project says one tornado touched down near Verona around 12:35 p.m. It has been rated EF1, with estimated maximum winds of 150 km/h.

That tornado caused damage through the Verona, Hartington and Harrowsmith areas, including damage to farm properties and trees. Investigators say its damage track was about 18 kilometres long and reached up to 510 metres wide.

A second tornado was confirmed in Kingston about 15 minutes later. It has been rated EF0, with estimated maximum winds of 115 km/h.

That tornado left a damage path from Silver Corners southeast toward CFB Kingston. Its track was nearly 11 kilometres long and up to 250 metres wide.

No injuries were reported from either tornado.

The Northern Tornadoes Project says both tornadoes formed along the leading edge of a bow-echo thunderstorm as it moved southeast from Verona toward Kingston.

The confirmations came after ground and drone surveys were carried out July 3. Satellite images also showed visible tree damage in some areas.

The June 30 storm caused widespread damage across parts of the Kingston region, bringing down trees, damaging property and creating power-related issues for many residents.
