Kingston Police warn of food delivery scam targeting bank cards and PINs

Police say suspects are posing as food delivery drivers and customers to steal debit cards and banking information.

Kingston Police are warning residents about a food delivery scam targeting bank cards and PINs.

Police say several incidents have recently been reported across the Kingston area involving two people working together. One suspect allegedly poses as a customer who claims their payment card is not working, while the other poses as a food delivery driver.

The customer offers the victim cash and asks them to pay for the food using a PIN payment terminal. During the transaction, the victim's bank card is switched with another card. The victim then enters their PIN, unknowingly giving suspects access to both.

Police say stolen cards have later been used for cash withdrawals, deposits of bad cheques and retail purchases.

Residents are reminded not to enter their PIN into a terminal for a transaction they did not initiate or use their bank card in exchange for cash.

Anyone who believes their card has been compromised should contact their financial institution, cancel the card, change their PIN and monitor their account.
