The official bird were unveiled during Kingston Fall Birding Festival.
Kingston has officially named not one, but two feathered favourites as its City Birds.
After a community vote, the vibrant cardinal and the clever crow tied for top spot, each receiving 339 votes.
More than 1,650 residents cast their ballots in the survey, which featured 16 local species. The red-winged blackbird came in third, followed by the blue jay and mourning dove.
The winners were revealed during the Kingston Fall Birding Festival on Saturday, which also marked World Migratory Bird Day.
“It’s clear based on the response to this engagement that Kingstonians care about our feathered citizens,” says Karen Santucci, Director of Public Works and Solid Waste.
The designation is part of Kingston’s application to become a certified Bird-Friendly City, promoting protection of birds and their habitats. The crow and cardinal now share the spotlight as symbols of Kingston’s natural environment.
