New downtown Kingston banner celebrating the band draws online criticism over mirrored image.
A new banner celebrating Kingston rock legends The Tragically Hip is turning heads downtown — and stirring debate online.
The large mural, installed on the Chown parking garage across from Hotel Dieu Hospital, features all five members of the band. It is part of a broader campaign by Visit Kingston to honour The Tragically Hip ahead of the 10th anniversary of the group’s final hometown concert this August.
While many residents praised the tribute, others quickly noticed the image appears reversed. Fans pointed out that guitarist Paul Langlois and bassist Gord Sinclair appear left-handed in the mural, sparking criticism across social media.
Several commenters questioned how the mirrored image made it through production, while others defended the project and called it a minor mistake.
According to online posts, the issue is expected to be corrected in the coming days.
The Tragically Hip’s final Kingston performance in 2016 drew national attention and remains an emotional moment for many Canadian music fans.
