Officials say simple precautions around pools, lakes and rivers can help prevent tragedies during the busy summer season.
As warmer weather arrives and more residents head to pools, lakes, rivers and other waterways, Kingston Police are reminding the public to make water safety a top priority this summer.
Police say preventable drownings and water-related emergencies continue to occur across Ontario every year, but many incidents can be avoided by taking simple precautions and staying alert around water.
Families are being urged to keep children within arm’s reach at all times near water and never leave a child unattended in a bathtub, swimming pool, lake or river. Officials also recommend properly fitted lifejackets or personal flotation devices for children and weaker swimmers.
Residents are encouraged to avoid swimming alone and to stay sober while swimming or boating, as alcohol, cannabis and drugs can impair judgment and reaction times.
Kingston Police are also warning swimmers to watch for fast-flowing water, sudden drop-offs and changing lake or river conditions that can quickly become dangerous, even for experienced swimmers.
Officials say everyone should learn basic swimming and water safety skills to help ensure a safe and enjoyable summer season.
