Investigators say names and phone numbers of banks are spoofed on caller IDs to appear legitimate.
Kingston Police are warning residents of a fake bank investigator scam.
The scam involves callers contacting unsuspecting people claiming to be representing a bank that is conducting a fraud investigation and requires the customer’s assistance.
Police say these callers try to get people to turn over passwords and other sensitive information. They say scammers will spoof names and phone numbers of banks on caller IDs to appear that it is a real business.
Investigators say once a scammer gains access to an account, they can monitor banking activity, steal personal information, and send unauthorized e-transfers.
They say legitimate financial institutions will never ask for remote access to your device or request confidential banking credentials by phone, text, or email.
Anyone who may have received a call claiming to be a bank are being asked to hang up and contact the bank branch directly.
