Divers were initially looking for another ship when they found something different.
Underwater enthusiasts in Kingston got to see a presentation of a rare discovery in Lake Ontario.
The Great Lakes Museum hosted a presentation called "Unearthing Lake Ontario’s Untouched Shipwreck" on May 1.
The presentation documented the 2025 discovery of a virgin shipwreck at the bottom of Lake Ontario near shores of downtown Toronto.
Heison Chak, President of the Ontario Underwater Council, says they initially were searching for another ship, Rapid City, that sank to the bottom of the lake in 1917.
It wasn't until Chak and the crew returned to shore that they realized that the ship that they found was not the Rapid City.
Chak says there are a number of documented shipwrecks across the great lakes.
He what he is trying to determine is the engineering design of the ship and compare that to more recent vessels.
The shipwreck has drawn interest by not only locally but around the world. Chak's presentation has been shown in 60 countries and in 12 different languages.
