City prepares temporary shelter at Salvation Army as temperatures drop below –20 C.
A temporary overnight warming centre will open in Kingston this weekend as extreme cold weather moves into the region.
City officials say temperatures are forecast to fall consistently below –20 C with the windchill, prompting staff to activate additional supports for people experiencing homelessness.
The warming centre will operate at the Salvation Army, located at 342 Patrick Street, from 9 p.m. to 8:30 a.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 6 to 8.
The Salvation Army will work closely with local shelter operators and community partners to help individuals access safe indoor spaces during the cold weather event. People who arrive at the warming centre will be welcomed and, when possible, connected to an available shelter bed where additional services and supports are available.
The site will offer chairs, cots, blankets, warm drinks and snacks.
