Ontario Provincial Police are reminding residents that a few simple safety steps can help protect property and prevent unwanted incidents.

The OPP’s East Region says residents should lock homes, garages, sheds and vehicles when they are not in use. Valuables, tools and other items should also be kept out of sight in vehicles.

Police recommend securing off-road vehicles, trailers and other equipment, while motion-activated lights and security cameras can provide added protection. Residents can also register cameras with CamSafe to help police identify possible video sources during investigations.

The OPP is also urging caution when buying or selling items through Facebook Marketplace and other online platforms.

Residents should avoid sharing unnecessary personal or financial information and arrange meetings in public places whenever possible. Bringing someone along and being cautious about unusual payment requests can also help.

Police say if something does not feel right, residents should trust their instincts and walk away from the transaction.
