The hospital is modifying areas at Kingston General Hospital for potential patient use as it prepares for increased demand during the colder months.
Kingston Health Sciences Centre (KHSC) is preparing additional patient-care spaces as it anticipates increased demand for hospital services this fall and winter.
KHSC said it is identifying areas at its Kingston General Hospital site that could temporarily accommodate patients if demand exceeds its regular capacity.
Selected spaces are being modified with features such as patient call bells and privacy curtains. The hospital is also reviewing staffing arrangements and contingency plans.
KHSC expects seasonal illnesses, including influenza, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and COVID-19, to increase demand for inpatient care. The hospital said it experienced record patient volumes last winter.
KHSC is also working to improve patient flow and expand care outside the hospital. Through programs such as KHSC@Home, an alternate care facility in Amherstview and virtual-care services, the hospital supports more than 800 patients daily outside its hospital walls.
President and CEO Dr. David Pichora said preparations aim to help patients continue receiving appropriate care during periods of exceptional demand.
KHSC says alternative spaces would only be used when necessary, following established overcapacity protocols.
