Aba Mortley beat out incumbent Greg Ridge to win the seat in King's Town.
The position of mayor was not the only surprise coming from Monday's municipal election in Kingston.
The King's Town district will see a new person on council as Aba Mortley defeated incumbent Greg Ridge.
Mortley says she ran a strong campaign but wasn't sure if it was enough to get her across the finish line.
Mortley, Ridge, and Melissa Reid were in the running for the council seat in King's Town.
Mortley says now that she has been elected, she aims to be as transparent as possible.
Mortley will join a council that will have seven returning members from the last term.
She says as a newcomer to council, she will try and pick the brains of her colleagues.
The new mayor and councillors will be officially sworn-in on November 24.
