Province moves ahead with Highway 62 intersection upgrade amid economic uncertainty
The Ontario government is moving forward with plans to build a new roundabout in Prince Edward County at the intersection of Highway 62 and County Road 1.
The project is expected to improve road safety, reduce the risk of collisions and create good-paying construction jobs, the province said Tuesday.
The Ministry of Transportation has awarded a detailed design contract to Stantec Consulting Ltd. The work includes rebuilding pavement, adjusting road entrances, improving drainage and adding new lighting and landscaping. Construction will follow once the design phase is complete.
The province says the project is part of a broader $30-billion investment to build, repair and expand highways, roads and bridges across Ontario.
Local leaders say the intersection has long been a safety concern and that the roundabout will help protect drivers and pedestrians.
Ontario’s roads consistently rank among the safest in North America, with one of the lowest traffic fatality rates per licensed driver.
