Councillor Paul Chaves feels education and issuing tickets has not deterred people from parking their vehicles where they shouldn't be.

The issue of illegal parking in residential neighbourhoods has gotten one Kingston City Councillor up in arms.

Council passed a motion from Cllr Paul Chaves on Tuesday directing staff to review the City's parking by-law and report back by the end of 2027.

Chaves says he has received complaints from residents in his district about the number of vehicles being parked whether it is on the street or in the driveway.

He says in some cases the vehicles are impeding pedestrians who use the sidewalks.

Chaves believes the City isn't doing enough to enforce the parking by-laws.

He says he understands people first need to be educated on the matter but there comes a time when harsh penalties need to come into play.

One of the reasons Chaves believes there are so many vehicles being parked illegally is the lack of affordable housing in Kingston.

The direction to staff also asks them to look at other municipalities and how they handle parking violations there.
