New Helix Wet Lab opens to help Kingston life sciences companies grow faster

New BSL-2 laboratory at Providence Care Hospital aims to support research, innovation and commercialization

Kingston's growing health and life sciences sector has received a boost with the official opening of the Helix Wet Lab at Providence Care Hospital.

Kingston Economic Development celebrated the new facility with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and open house on July 16. The 1,000-square-foot Biosafety Level 2 (BSL-2) certified laboratory is designed to help emerging health and life sciences companies move new ideas from research to commercialization.

The lab offers dedicated bench space, office work areas and access to specialized scientific equipment, including biosafety cabinets, PCR systems, microscopes and incubators. It also connects companies with Kingston's research institutions, healthcare organizations and innovation network. Allison Philpot, VP of System Innovation explains their initial main focus.

The project is part of Kingston Economic Development's $3.4-million life sciences initiative, which supports early-stage and growing businesses through laboratory infrastructure, commercialization funding, business support and access to expert mentors and research partners.
