Concerned citizens say they support homeless services but don’t believe this is the right location.
Some Kingston residents are upset about the city’s plan to open a 45-bed homeless shelter at 924 Sydenham Rd.
Neighbours raised concerns at a public meeting last Thursday, saying the shelter site borders the historic Cataraqui Cemetery, where Sir John A. Macdonald is buried.
Residents say the area is not close to services that people experiencing homelessness may need and worry that encampments could form nearby, including in the planned Purdy’s Mill Park.
One resident wrote to city council, saying the project has not had proper public input, planning, or risk studies.
Others say they support homeless services but don’t believe this is the right location.
They also want the city to confirm the shelter would only be temporary. Some want the plan paused for the moment.
The city has not yet announced a timeline for the shelter.
