The City has agreed to purchase St. Patrick's Catholic School on the condition that an organization will take it off the City's hands.
Two former Catholic schools in Kingston could get a new lease on life.
St. Patrick's Catholic School and St. Peter's Catholic School are both closed and were declared surplus by the Algonquin Lakeshore Catholic District School Board.
City Council approved a staff report at their June 16th meeting to purchase the property on 158 Patrick St, where St. Patrick's school sits, from the Board.
Mayor Bryan Paterson says the hope is to have user groups come up and buy the property from the City to be repurposed.
Paterson says they are also looking to do the same for the St. Peter's site on 7th Ave and lease it out to groups.
He says the properties are located in established neighbourhoods and would benefit those who are looking for a place to meet.
Staff have recommended that the $2.2 million being used to purchase the St. Patrick's property be funded from the disposition of the property.
