A major community donation is helping push Kingston’s first inclusive playground closer to reality.
Volunteers from the Inclusive Play Project have contributed $82,500 to support the new accessible playground planned for Shannon Park.
The space is designed to welcome children of all ages and abilities, with ramps, rubber safety surfacing, and equipment that supports mobility aids and sensory needs.
IPP Volunteer, Rachel Doornekamp speaks on what exactly this entails.
Shannon Park, located at 199 Wilson St., was selected for the project due to its accessible features and proximity to the Rideau Heights Community Centre. With this latest contribution, over $1.2 million has been raised through donations and public funding.
Doornekamp explains why this is essential for families and the happiness of their children.
Construction is expected to begin in 2026.
