Flag-raising ceremony, art exhibition and family activities planned at Confederation Park on Aug. 1.
The City of Kingston is inviting residents to recognize Emancipation Day with a public celebration focused on remembrance, education and community connection.
The event will take place Aug. 1 at Confederation Park and begins with a flag-raising ceremony at 12:30 p.m. Organizers say the gathering will honour those who fought to end slavery across the British Empire while encouraging continued efforts to address racial discrimination in Canada.
The ceremony will feature musical performances, a youth tribute and a keynote address from equity and inclusion consultant Keishia Facey. Her presentation, titled Honouring the Past, Empowering the Future, will explore the legacy of emancipation and its relevance today.
A community art exhibition follows at 1:30 p.m., featuring interactive displays on resistance, freedom and healing. Artwork and artifacts highlighting the achievements and resilience of African civilizations will also be showcased.
Food vendors, cultural displays and family-friendly activities hosted by Kingston Frontenac Public Library are planned. The event is free and open to the public.
