Four-day event encourages locals to document wildlife across the city.
Residents in Kingston are being encouraged to head outdoors and take part in a global effort to track biodiversity later this month.
The City Nature Challenge runs from April 24th to 27th, inviting people to photograph or record sounds of wildlife in their backyards, local parks and neighbourhoods. The goal is to document as many species as possible and upload observations to the iNaturalist platform.
Now in its fourth year participating, Kingston joins 38 other Canadian cities in a friendly competition to see which community can record the most observations.
Organizers say anything from plants to animals — or even evidence of life — can be submitted, as long as it is found in the wild. Participants are also encouraged to note locations to support research efforts.
City staff say this year’s challenge is especially meaningful as Kingston marks its first year as a certified bird-friendly city, with an added focus on spotting local bird species.
Results from the challenge will be announced after May 13.
