The City is implementing their two-week University District Safety Initiative starting Friday.
The manager of enforcement services with the City of Kingston says they are ready for the influx of new and returning students to the Limestone City.
Starting at 12:01 am Friday, the City will be implementing their University District Safety Initiative to ensure an orderly return to classes especially in areas near Queen's University.
Steve Mothersall says keeping the city streets safe is a total group effort.
There will be an increased presence in police and by-law enforcement each day. In addition, the Gord Downie Pier and Breakwater Park will be closed nightly to visitors between 7 pm and 6 pm.
Mothersall says there will also be road closures and parking restrictions for move-in day.
Mothersall says there have been several large gatherings but nothing too serious but he expects there will be some unsanctioned parties.
How does one compare handling a large gathering such as the recent Forever Hip event at Springer Market Square to the tens of thousands of students?
Mothersall says it all comes down to planning and preparation.
The University District Safety Initiative will run until 6 am September 13.
