Residents urged to avoid upfront cash payments and high-pressure contractors.
Police are warning residents to be careful of door-to-door paving scams as warmer weather arrives and home improvement season begins.
Police say scammers are approaching homeowners claiming they are already working in the neighbourhood and can offer discounted driveway paving services using leftover materials. Victims are often pressured to pay cash upfront before any work begins.
According to police, some homeowners are left with unfinished driveways, poor-quality paving work or piles of asphalt and debris abandoned on their property. In some cases, the debris can block roadways and create safety concerns.
Police say fraudulent contractors can appear legitimate by using professional-looking websites, invoices and contracts. Residents are being encouraged to independently verify businesses before agreeing to work or making payments.
Investigators are warning residents to watch for contractors offering unusually low prices, demanding immediate decisions or requesting large cash payments in advance.
Homeowners are encouraged to research contractors, get written estimates and avoid unsolicited door-to-door offers.
Anyone who believes they may have been targeted or victimized is asked to contact Kingston Police at 613-549-4660 ext. 0.
