Police say real banks will never ask for personal information or ask you to transfer money to another account.
Kingston Police are warning the public about a scam involving criminals pretending to be bank investigators in order to steal money.
The scam often starts with an unexpected phone call, email or in-person visit. The scammer claims there’s suspicious activity on the victim’s account and asks for sensitive information like passwords or security codes.
In some cases, they even ask to collect the victim’s bank cards.
Police say this is a fraud, and that real banks will never ask for this kind of information or ask you to transfer money to another account.
Kingston Police urge residents to never share personal or financial details with unknown individuals unless they’ve confirmed their identity.
If you receive a suspicious message or call, hang up and contact your bank directly using the official contact information.
Anyone who believes they’ve been targeted is asked to report the incident to Kingston Police.
