Committee to consider next steps for redevelopment that could add a second NHL-sized rink and modern amenities.
The City of Kingston is taking another step toward a possible redevelopment of the Kingston Memorial Centre, with a proposal that includes a long-term partnership with Queen's University.
A report will go before the city's Arts, Recreation and Community Policies Committee on June 25. It outlines plans to continue discussions on expanding and modernizing the York Street facility as part of a broader recreation infrastructure strategy.
Under the proposal, Queen's University would enter into a long-term lease agreement if the project moves forward. The university has called the Memorial Centre home for its men's and women's varsity hockey teams and student recreation programs since 2008.
The redevelopment could include two NHL-sized ice pads, upgraded locker rooms and training spaces, and improved spectator amenities while continuing to support community recreation and events.
City officials say the project is part of a larger vision that also includes Centre 70 and Portsmouth Olympic Harbour to expand recreation opportunities across Kingston.
If approved, the committee's recommendation would move the project into its next planning phase before any final decisions on design, funding or construction are made.
