More than 250 volunteers in six Ontario communities will be picking up litter on shorelines on September 28.
Kingston is one of six cities in Ontario taking part in the Great Lakes Coastal Clean Up.
It is happening on Sept. 28 which is World Rivers Day.
The city is partnering with local organizations to set up cleanup sites, provide supplies, and train volunteers.
In a news release, there will be over 250 volunteers collecting up to 200 kilograms of litter at beaches, parks, and other shoreline areas along Lakes Superior, Huron, Erie, and Ontario, and the St. Lawrence River.
The initiative was created after Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative received an $85,000 grant from the Ontario Great Lakes Local Action Fund.
They say 22 million pounds of plastic enter the great lakes each year and shoreline cleanups help reduce pollution at the source.
Cobourg, Thunder Bay, Chatham-Kent, Owen Sound, and Collingwood are the other communities that are also taking part in the clean up.
Anyone interested in volunteering or for more information, go the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative website.
