Two Kingston Health Sciences Centre cardiologists will study ways to speed up heart failure diagnosis and improve access to cardiac imaging.
Two Kingston cardiologists are receiving $50,000 in research funding to help improve heart care and reduce delays for patients.
The University Hospitals Kingston Foundation (UHKF) Women’s Giving Circle awarded $25,000 each to Dr. Aws Almufleh and Dr. Maria Luz Garagiola of Kingston Health Sciences Centre (KHSC).
Almufleh’s research will focus on identifying heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF), a common type of heart failure that can be difficult to diagnose. His team is developing an approach that uses information from patients’ medical records to help doctors identify the condition before an ultrasound is available.
Almufleh explains more.
Garagiola’s project will examine whether portable point-of-care ultrasound can be safely used during regular clinic visits for adults living with congenital heart disease. The approach could help identify patients requiring further imaging and reduce testing delays. She explains more.
The Women’s Giving Circle has more than 130 members who support medical research at KHSC and Providence Care. Its funding aims to turn promising research into better patient care.
