City to iron out details before installing portable structure at Belle Park

The shelter would be used by Feed the People for their meal program.

More scrutiny is needed before a temporary structure can be installed at Belle Park.

A motion by Councillor Jeff McLaren at Tuesday's Kingston City Council meeting called for a portable building to be installed to help the local organization Feed the People with their volunteer-run meal program.

The building was donated by an unnamed individual.

However, CAO Linda Hurdle says City staff have raised some concerns with the motion.

Council instead passed an amended motion that would see staff work with Feed the People organizers on the details of the structure, determine what permits are required and what modifications are needed to comply with regulations.

Hurdle says this will give them more time to analyze the building.

McLaren says the intent of his motion was to get something in place before the snow starts to fall. He is worried the amended motion could lead to delays.

McLaren is stressing the importance of this structure to the city.

Bryan Paterson, in his final meeting as Mayor, was in favour of the amendment saying staff need to do their due diligence on this matter.

The structure will replace the one that was taken down by high winds last month.
