Here’s what the money would do
Kingston city council is set to vote on a $300,000 plan to improve access to food in the city.
The plan includes a one-time $200,000 contribution in the 2025 city budget and $100,000 from the Fines for Food program.
The money would support a new food system framework. The goal is to map out food programs, find ways to work better with community partners, and suggest improvements.
Council declared a food insecurity emergency in January after learning that one in nine households in Kingston struggle to get enough food.
The new plan responds to about 10 priorities in the city’s current strategic plan. It would focus on four funding areas: meal programs, small infrastructure upgrades, new pilot projects, and food business start-up grants.
City staff worked with community groups to create the plan.
Council is expected to discuss the framework at its meeting tonight (Tuesday).
