New self-serve lockers aim to remove barriers and get more residents active in neighbourhood parks.
Getting outside and playing sports is becoming easier in Kingston thanks to a new program that offers free access to equipment in parks across the city.
The City of Kingston has partnered with Equip Sport and Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities to install 30 self-serve sport equipment lockers in parks. Residents can borrow items such as basketballs, soccer balls and frisbees using the free Equip Sport mobile app.
City officials launched the initiative on June 11 at Molly McGlynn Park, where members of council joined local youth in games of soccer, football and frisbee using equipment from one of the lockers.
Manager of stakeholder relations for Canadian Tire Jumpstart chairities, Lori Gagnon talks about the celebration.
The equipment available at each location is matched to the park’s amenities, making it easier for families and visitors to take part in recreational activities without purchasing their own gear. Gagnon explains more.
Tony Gargaro, the City of Kingston’s manager of recreational services, said the partnership helps expand opportunities for unstructured play and recreation while encouraging residents to try new sports and enjoy public spaces.
The initiative supports the city’s goal of building an active and connected community. Information on the locations of all 30 equipment lockers is available on the City of Kingston’s website.
