Kingston completes major Bayridge Drive project with safer routes for cyclists, pedestrians and transit users

New multi-use pathways, protected intersections and transit upgrades now connect key west-end neighbourhoods.

The City of Kingston has officially completed the Bayridge Drive Transportation Improvements Project, marking the milestone with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on July 15.

The project creates a continuous active transportation corridor designed for people of all ages and abilities who walk, roll, cycle or use transit. Construction began in 2023 and was completed this summer in two phases. Commissioner of Transportation and Infrastructure Services Ian Semple explains what the project means for the community.

The improvements include dedicated off-road multi-use pathways and protected cycle tracks between Cataraqui Woods Drive and Henderson Boulevard. Crews also upgraded 10 signalized intersections with bike signals, crossrides and protected intersection safety features to improve safety for all road users.

The project also added 10 island bus platforms and new transit shelters, making Kingston Transit stops more accessible along the corridor. Councillor Wendy Stephens shares her thoughts on the completed project.

The city received more than $6.9 million through the federal Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program to expand the project beyond its original scope. Semple says the improvements are designed to make it easier and safer for everyone to move around the city, whether walking, cycling, rolling or taking transit.

Officials say the upgrades respond to community feedback and strengthen Kingston's active transportation network. Kingston resident Rob, who regularly bikes along Bayridge Drive, shares his thoughts.

Part of the corridor, between Coverdale Drive and Henderson Boulevard, will also become part of the Great Lakes Waterfront Trail and a future north-south route connecting Creekford Road to Front Road and downtown Kingston.
