Dr. Stephen Archer is one of three from Kingston to be named to the Order of Canada.
A Queen's University professor and cardiologist says he is quite surprised to be appointed to the Order of Canada.
Dr. Stephen Archer was one of 61 named to the Order on Friday. He will serve as a Member of the Order.
Archer was born in Nova Scotia and grew up in New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island. He first came to Queen's as a student.
Archer says someone thought highly to nominate him for the Order of Canada.
Archer is being recognized for his work in cardiology. After graduating, he spent time travelling around the world working as a cardiologist before returning to Queen's to work as Head of Medicine .
Archer says the one area he specializes in is pulmonary arterial hypertension.
Archer admits he was surprised after learning he was being named to the Order of Canada. He says he spent half of his time working in the United States.
He also says he often lobbied the federal government to put more money into health care and research.
Archer is one of three recipients from Kingston. Former United Way KFL&A CEO Bhavana Varma, and filmmaker and activist Nancy Nicol were also named as Members of the Order.
