KHSC receives AI-assisted MRI upgrade thanks to Kingston philanthropist

Stephen Sorensen's latest gift will allow more patients to be scanned each day while enhancing the overall patient experience.

There is some upgrades being made to the MRI machine at Kingston Health Sciences Centre thanks to a local philanthropist.

They recently received a gift from Stephen Sorensen to the tune of $103,000.

The funds will be used to install the Deep Resolve artificial intelligence imaging suite from Siemens Healthineers on KHSC's 3-Tesla MRI scanner. The unit will allow more patients to be scanned each day while enhancing the overall patient experience.

In a news release, the Deep Resolve imaging suites will accelerate MRI examinations while improving image quality across a wide range of studies, enable rapid brain imaging for critically ill patients in emergency and inpatient settings, and deliver exceptionally detailed imaging of structures such as the prostate and spinal cord, supporting earlier diagnosis and more precise treatment planning.

Sorensen has previously made donations to the hospital that went towards advanced cardiac CT imaging, a portable MRI system for critically ill ICU patients, a new interventional radiology suite, advanced breast cancer surgical technology and, most recently, the Emergency Department (ED) Diagnostic Imaging initiative.

KHSC says this is part of his ongoing commitment to targeted clinician-based philanthropy that support priorities identified by frontline clinicians that can deliver immediate, measurable benefits for patients.
